Big Data in the Public Sector: Three Ways Big Data is Reshaping Government Services
Data is the currency of the technological economy, with data science incorporated into almost every industry in 2020. The public sector, while trailing behind private enterprise, has become increasingly aware of the value that can be extracted from data sets. With advancements in technologies such as machine learning and cloud computing, coupled with global Open Government initiatives, emerging Big Data use cases in healthcare, transport, agriculture, justice and resource management are all shedding light on the opportunities of data as a critical asset. Most public sector data and information management professionals across Australia and New Zealand (A/NZ) understand data for …

Data Science & Machine Learning for the Public Sector
“The DPC had long had a data team, but “we were not really a data science place. We were very much just an analytical team.” A department like DPC has a constant flow of data coming in, and analysing it efficiently and appropriately is the role of the data team. They were good at their job, “but we found that there was more that we could be doing with the data to really exploit that data in a better way. We also needed to do it quicker.” There was a lot of talk around the team about how this could …

Scaling and maturing automation to drive employee and student experience
The main focus of the automation was bots, software programs designed to perform repetitive tasks. But most of these bots “were on individual computers with no consistent coding.” There also wasn’t a lot of control around the bots, but the biggest problem was that there “was a lot of fear from staff around jobs,” specifically that automation could render some roles redundant. Overall, there were a lot of issues and misconceptions. The purpose of automation and RPA is to have “something that is scalable, easy to use and consistent amongst all environments.” Ultimately it is about reducing risks and errors, …

Big Data & Actionable Analytics for Government
All organisations collect data and use data. Some have data strategies to inform how the data is used and managed, whilst others use data in creative ways to deal with challenges and crises, including COVID-19. This paper presents the perspectives of three data experts from different sized public sector organisations. Between them, they are using the data at their disposal to streamline manual processes, to manage crises, and to assist their stakeholders and residents in new and creative ways. The lessons from these perspectives can assist others to also use data in innovative ways.

AI in the Public Sector
The amount of data being produced is constantly increasing, particularly in the public sector, and technology is constantly improving. As such, artificial intelligence (AI), with data at its core, is making its way into the public sector in order to drive efficiencies. This paper focuses on the data and AI journeys of three data experts from three different institutions. All three agree that AI is creating efficiency and is a viable and popular solution for certain problems, but it needs to be used appropriately and for the right reasons.

Information & Data Management
All organisations collect data and use data. Some organisations have embraced technology more than others and have therefore been able to leverage their data better. The goal now is for other organisations to better use the data at their disposal, and to integrate it with their available technology, to improve the efficiency of the organisation and the customer experience. This paper presents two Australian examples and a Canadian perspective on how data can be used to create efficiencies and to change the operations of an organisation for the better. The lessons contained within these examples are relevant to any organisation …
