Disruption and Opportunity: Strategies to Build Digital Trust in Citizens While Creating Intelligent Cities
Major cities and large towns the world over have access to opportunities and initiatives that smaller townships and communities can only dream about. Yet the people in the rural and remote communities still have the same aspirations and desires, and also generally know about the things that they don’t have access to. In our modern and connected world, it is imperative that there are equal opportunities irrespective of location or jurisdiction, and thus some of the municipalities in rural areas are some of the most active when it comes to working with and advancing technology for their communities.

Overcoming the Housing Supply Challenges in Nova Scotia by Using Data-Driven Solutions
Governments of all tiers and all persuasions are responsible for looking after and preserving the land and waters that are within their jurisdictions. Whilst many governments have policies regarding the use of their territories, some take them more seriously than others. One that takes it very seriously is Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) in Nova Scotia. Kate Greene, the Regional Policy Manager at HRM, says their area is quite small, covering only about 10% of the land area of Nova Scotia, and it takes just two and a half hours to drive the 200 kilometres from end to end, but they …

Tapping into Lessons Learned from COVID-19 to Better Prevent, Prepare and Proactively Manage at the Local Level
The COVID-19 pandemic was something that no country, government or agency was truly prepared for. Whilst most government departments and municipalities spend significant time planning for disasters and have contingencies for all manner of scenarios, the pandemic was more significant and comprehensive than anyone imagined. The Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) was set up to plan for disasters and to create appropriate plans and mitigation strategies, but Michael Luchia, the Acting Deputy Chief of CEMA, says that the pandemic has not been a normal disaster, so whilst some of the plans worked as intended, others didn’t.

A Holistic Approach to Municipal Innovation
Innovation has become the buzzword of the current era, as the world slowly emerges from the pandemic. But some institutions have been innovating, creating and working with new technologies to develop imaginative solutions for many years. City councils are often at the forefront of such advances, and one municipality in Canada that is leading the way is the City of Edmonton in the province of Alberta. Catherine Sparks, the Director of Service Design at the City of Edmonton, says that in many ways, we are really a leader in the smart city space and other areas, and they are keen …

Revamping the Roadmap to a Smarter and Resilient Shared Service Model
Government services are made up of different departments and agencies all working towards a common cause. Many of the institutions often feel siloed and independent, yet as Paul Glover, the President of Shared Services Canada says, any service that you interact with in the federal government, if it's digital in some way, then Shared Services Canada (SSC) has something to do with it. They make government services run and in the process, link many of the departments and agencies. We essentially provide IT and technology-based services to all federal departments and agencies. This includes networks, hardware and software. The individual …

Ensuring Investments in Smart Infrastructure Deliver Maximum Value to Citizens
The pace of technology in our modern world means that organizations at all levels and in all sectors constantly need to move forward or they will be left behind. This is particularly true in the public sector and at the municipal government level. It is often said that municipal governments are closest to the people, but in order for that to be all the more accurate, municipal governments need to embrace the technological advancements that so many of their citizens are engaged in daily. Many of them do that and do it very well. But in a broad sense it …

Challenging Bias and Barriers & How to Champion for Change and Become a Better Ally in the Workplace
When is the right time to step up? Lena Metlege Diab says that if you were to sit and think about when is the right time to have a baby, many of us may never find the right time for it. We may never be ready. But sometimes you just need to take the plunge and hopefully it turns out good on the other side. The same is true for women’s advocacy, whether it’s politics or leadership roles, particularly if we have a drive for it. The biggest inhibiting factor is self-belief. As a woman, when you speak out, you …

Building Digital Talent Across Government Teams
We live in a world these days where almost every service has a digital component, and that is as true in the private sector as it is in the public sector. For instance, no agency, department or company is legitimate without a website, though an information-only website it not sufficient; it needs to be a portal for interaction and service provision. Hillary Hartley, the Deputy Minister and Chief Digital and Data Officer at the Ontario Digital Service, which is part of the Ministry of Finance, says that the digitization of society means that the public expects to be able to …
