The Future of Digital Strategy in Queensland Government

Digital technology is evolving at a pace that is hard to keep up with; Innovation is accelerating as technologies such as robotics, cloud, big data, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and machine learning continue to transform our everyday lives, as well as the Australian economy.

Government digital strategies can often focus on the potential of digital services, thinking primarily about customer service channels, technology, standard operating environments, software as service and cloud computing. While this is important, it isn’t enough to create a true digital revolution. That is why the Queensland government is readying new long-term innovation and digital economy plans with state ministers working on a new whole-of-government digital strategy and a revamped start-up push, while also rolling out a plan to produce 10,000 digital professionals in just a few years.

According to digital economy minister Leeanne Enoch, the “big picture” strategies were being designed to give the local industry certainty for years ahead regardless of politics, and to support the state’s economic recovery. The state government will look to build its own digital capabilities with about $20 million in the latest budget for this year’s COVID-19 digital service programs, cybersecurity upgrades and a digital archives project.

Why is a digital strategy important?

The need to deliver better services to customers at a lower cost is driving every level of government to look for new and innovative solutions. Rising customer expectations require government agencies to be ready to deliver and receive digital information and services anytime, anywhere and on any device. These streamlined and seamless services need to be delivered safely, securely and with fewer resources. To build for the future, the Queensland Government needs a digital strategy that embraces the opportunity to innovate more with less and enables entrepreneurs to better leverage government data to improve the quality of services to their citizens.

While not yet released, Queensland’s digital strategy for 2022 and beyond has an ambitious goal of placing Queensland Government at the heart of the nation’s digital transformation. Throughout ever changing conditions and uncertain futures, the next five years will be aimed at leading the way in a digital revolution and economic recovery.
